Day of the Dead Celebration

November 2, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us to celebrate and learn about the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)! Day of the Dead is an ancient Mexican tradition that honours our ancestors and departed loved ones, by creating altars with their photographs, adorned with flowers, candles, and their favorite treats. It is a time of year when the veil to the spirit world is considered -by many cultures- thin. And this act of honouring family with altars in the home, and visiting the cemetery is to show our loved ones that they are not forgotten. While, it sounds like a somber affair, it is not. Day of the Dead is one of the most lively and beautiful festivals in Mexico, full of flowers, music, art, costumes, and candlelight. One reason for the lack of somberness is that this Mexican tradition speaks to a joyful afterlife, that death is nothing to fear – So, for instance, to dress as a skeleton is essentially to laugh at fear. Secondly, the displays of colour, and joy, and laughter are also to show our departed loved ones -that we are ok- so as not to worry their visiting souls. Wherever we are, or wherever we are from, this is a joyful time of year, and it is a time to celebrate our departed loved ones, with our families and our friends. We look forward to sharing more of this tradition with you, this Hali Halloween season!
